Pocket Gnu

The Pocket Gnu is Bike Friday's fun bike for taking off-road and playing.
It’s not an accomplished off-roader meaning it will not duplicate the performance offered by a conventional 26in wheel mountain bike BUT it can be taken off road and you can have a lot of fun doing precisely that. The front suspension fork allows road and off-road shocks to be absorbed and the suspension seat post compliments the fork with a very fluid action. Both of these features combine to making the Gnu a very comfortable bike for long-distance riding as well as the commute to work or the last-minute dash to the corner shop for the pre expedition firelighters.
Our most popular equipment format centres around the fantastic SRAM Dual Drive hub that combines a bullet-proof three-speed hub with either an eight or nine speed derailleur system. The resultant 24 or 27 speeds are all usable gears with no overlaps. For those who really don't want this many gears the Dual Drive can be treated as three different ratios of eight or nine gears, in other words you have a low ratio 9-speed bike, a medium 9-speed bike or a high-ratio 9-speed bike. Easy if you want it to be!
We can also offer a conventional derailleur system combining a road tripe chain set, to get the gear ratios up, and a wide-ratio mountain bike cassette. The chain set is usually taken from a road bike to 'up' the ratios whilst the rear derailleur and cassette are chosen from durable mountain bike equipment.
The wide choice of tyres includes slicks and semi-slicks or a choice of off-road knobblies and semi-knobblies.
